No longer accepting new clients
Starting May 15, 2018, I am no longer accepting new clients. If you would like to get on my wait list, send me an email and I will contact you should I be able to open up my practice for new clients. Please also enjoy my archived blog posts while you're here. Thanks for your understanding!
Maybe you're interested in straightforward coaching about healthy eating and developing healthy lifestyle habits. Or maybe you want more technical help using nutrition to support the management of a disease or condition. Either way, Black Hills Nutrition can help.
As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist/Licensed Nutritionist, I have devoted my professional life to helping individuals use strategic and customized nutrition interventions to support the treatment of disease and optimize wellness. The technical name for this service is Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). Only those who have obtained the RD or RDN credential are adequately trained to provide clients with MNT. Everyone is different, and no single program, diet, system, or supplement program will work for everyone. My approach is to educate clients about the ways in which nutrition can be an integral part of disease management and health promotion. I then encourage my clients to actively problem solve based on the education I provide, and we work as a team to seek the best path forward. This is not a quick fix- it's an investment in your health.

What to expect
If you're looking for a way to make lasting changes that really make a difference in your health, you have come to the right place. If you're looking for inflexible meal plans at set Calorie levels, meal replacement shakes, or a "28 day program to burn fat and get lean that worked great for your neighbor and could change your life if you follow it strictly enough," you might want to look elsewhere. Here at Black Hills Nutrition, I believe that everyone is different, and the program that works for your neighbor most likely needs to be modified to meet your specific needs and tastes. This is why you hire a professional instead of relying on the latest diet book or multi-level marketing craze.
Commitment
In order for us to work together to make lasting changes, the recommended commitment is a minimum of 3 appointments. The first appointment is all about getting to know each other and learning about your concerns, collecting information, and discussing initial goals for your nutrition intervention. But don't worry - you'll receive at least one customized nutrition tip during the very first meeting. Information from this first meeting, combined with an extensive questionnaire including details of your medical history, is then used to develop a proposal for nutritional changes, lifestyle modifications, and potential nutritional supplements (if required) that can help you meet your goals. At the second meeting we review this proposal and establish a clear plan for the changes you want to make and the ways in which you will accomplish these changes. The third meeting is a follow-up discussion to review results and revise your nutrition plan to ensure it is meeting your needs.
Many people like to schedule additional appointments for more support and ideas, and to stay accountable to keep up with the nutrition plan.

Payments and insurance
Credit or debit cards are accepted for virtual visits. Either of those methods plus cash and check are accepted for in-person visits. At this time, Black Hills Nutrition is unable to directly bill your medical insurance company for services. However, if your insurance company covers visits to a registered dietitian and you are seen in person (not by phone), I can provide you with a Superbill that describes the services you paid for. You can then submit the Superbill to your insurance company to request reimbursement. Please work directly with your insurance company to confirm the benefits you are entitled to, find out if a referral is required, and determine if there are any limitations for reimbursement, such as if the service is limited to people with a specific medical diagnosis.
How do visits work? Who can participate?
Personalized nutrition visits are available in person in the Rapid City, SD area with location to be determined on an individual basis. Visits are also available by phone to residents of South Dakota and Washington State. Lindsey is not licensed to practice in all states (or countries) and is only able to meet by phone with people residing in either the states above or additional states (or countries) where dietitian licensing laws allow phone-based nutrition services from an unlicensed out of state dietitian. Contact Lindsey to discuss the licensing laws in your state. Skype/Face Time/Google Hangout visits are not available at this time. Of course, routine coordination of care with members of your healthcare team (such as your primary care provider) is included in the cost of your visits.
A word about meal plans
When deciding what to eat, it's important to have a plan. I encourage my clients to spend time each week planning meals and prepping ingredients so that you are set up for success to meet your nutrition goals, even when life gets busy. It is not my general practice to hand a completed meal plan to my clients. Meal plans ideally are something we develop together, are ever-evolving, and are more of a template than a plan, which allows for customization and alterations when dealing with "real life." These templates are more work initially because they require collaboration and revisions, but they are more worthwhile in the long run because they are customizable and promote healthy eating strategies that can be used for a lifetime.

How it works:
The best way to work with me is to purchase a package. If you buy an initial package of 3 appointments, for example, you'll pay up front for all 3 appointments. Then, when you schedule the second and third appointment, select the button below that corresponds with the correct appointment. This system applies to follow-up packages, too. Of course, you're able to purchase individual appointments. Once our appointment is confirmed, I'll send you an invoice via Paypal. The balance is due before our first appointment.
